Details: The Harriman-Jewell Series, with its tagline of “bringing the best of the performing arts to Kansas City,” has invited violinist Itzhak Perlman back for his ninth appearance as part of the series.

Perlman will play at 8 p.m. Oct. 4 at the Folly Theater. His program has not been finalized. His long-term relationship with the Harriman-Jewell series fits with his schedule. “I welcome all audiences at my concerts. The more one listens the more one becomes familiar with and hence comfortable with the music,” Perlman says.

Details: Zakharia Paliashvili - Abesalom and Eteri at Tbilisi State Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre, the oldest opera house in Georgia and symbol of the unique culture of Georgia. The theme of the opera is the triumph of love over personal relationships, social inequality and even death itself, given theatrical life in a super combination of music, vocal beauty and movement. Opera will host 60 children refugees from the South Osetia conflict zone.

Daniel Pearl was the Wall Street Journal reporter who was kidnapped and murdered by extremists in Pakistan shortly after 9/11. Annually in October, distinguished cultural organizations and artists join the initiative for peace and unite against violence and stand for unity, tolerance and cross-cultural understanding. We also want to dedicate this evening to all journalists who died during the armed conflicts in Georgia."

Details: Inspired by the burgeoning U.K. punk scene, Wire are often cited as one of the more important rock groups of the 1970s and 1980s. Critic Stewart Mason writes, "Over their brilliant first three albums, Wire expanded the sonic boundaries of not just punk, but rock music in general."

As removed from self-conscious intellectualism as they are from the inherent conservatism of much rock music, Wire employ their unique, endlessly restless and risk-taking creativity to question every aspect of songwriting, recording and performance.
